The Regional Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation and the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Sverdlovsk Region have released a joint statement regarding the operation carried out against Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg, APA’s Russian bureau reports.
The statement notes that, on July 27, as part of the investigation of criminal cases related to crimes committed in past years, employees of the regional office of the Investigative Committee of Russia, together with the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the support of fighters from the Special Rapid Response Unit (SOBR) of the Russian National Guard, carried out a number of operations.
It is stated that several individuals suspected of committing a number of crimes in Yekaterinburg in past years have been detained, and searches were conducted at their places of residence, and their involvement in the crimes under investigation, as well as in other offenses, is being examined.
It was noted that, in the interest of the investigation, detailed information will not be disclosed at this stage.
Note that on the morning of June 27, an operation was carried out in more than 10 apartments inhabited by Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg. Most members of the Safarov family, originally from Aghdam, were detained. During the operation, two brothers — Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov — were killed. Another 9 people were detained.
According to the information, 3 individuals were hospitalized. Their condition is reported to be serious.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has issued a statement regarding the incident.
