"Russia respects Azerbaijan's desire to establish closer ties with BRICS. Moscow is ready to provide any assistance to Azerbaijan in this matter," Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), said during a briefing held today, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.
According to her, more than 30 countries are currently interested in developing systematic relations with BRICS.
"We respect each country's sovereign wishes, and in this case, we respect Azerbaijan's desire to establish closer relations with BRICS. Moscow, as an ally, is ready to offer any assistance to Baku on this issue," the Russian MFA spokesperson said.
Note that some time ago, Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS. Thus, in the Joint Declaratıon of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China on the establishment of a strategic partnership, adopted on July 3 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Astana, it is stated that Azerbaijan has expressed its desire to join BRICS.
The Joint Declaration states that the Chinese side welcomes Azerbaijan's participation in BRICS cooperation.
Subsequently, Azerbaijan officially submitted an application for membership in BRICS.
