Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has commented on the hanging of an anti-Russian banner from the Kiev Bridge in Yerevan ahead of Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Armenia, APA’s Moscow correspondent reports.

Zakharova, speaking at a briefing today, accused the US Embassy in Armenia of being behind the incident.

She recalled that around 2,000 people work at the US Embassy in Armenia. “Apparently, some still haven’t run out of the money transferred via USAID, which is why they spend it on such projects,” she said.

Zakharova added, “The US Embassy has not understood that instead of trying to damage Russia-Armenia relations, they should focus on improving Russia-US relations.”

She also claimed that such actions are funded in many parts of the world and called this tactic “worn out.”

“We have a broad agenda with Armenia that covers not only discussions but also concrete, practical cooperation across all areas. We also know that many among the minority dislike this. That’s why we remain focused on a constructive, positive agenda,” Zakharova emphasized.

Note that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to make a working visit to Yerevan on May 21–22. Ahead of the visit, a large banner featuring a picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a message about the war in Ukraine was hung from a bridge in the Armenian capital.
