Despite a demand from Poland’s Foreign Ministry, the Russian Embassy has refused to vacate the former consulate building in Gdańsk, APA reports, citing RMF24.

According to the report, in a letter sent to the Gdańsk City Council, the Russian Embassy stated that an “administrative and technical staff member of the embassy will reside” in the former consulate building, citing this as the reason for refusing to hand over the property.

It was noted that on November 19, Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced a decision to revoke permission for the operation of the Russian consulate in Gdańsk. According to the Polish Foreign Ministry, the consulate must be closed by midnight on December 23, and its staff are required to leave Polish territory.

Speaking at a press conference held today, Gdańsk Deputy Mayor Emilia Lodzińska said the Russian Embassy had sent a letter to the city administration stating that an embassy administrative and technical employee would live in the building previously used by the Russian consulate. As a result, she said, “we will physically be unable to take possession of this property.”

Lodzińska stressed that claims by the Russian side that the property belongs to them are false and do not correspond to reality.
