A court in Russia has sentenced Azerbaijani blogger Huseyn Hasanov to four years in prison in absentia, Vedomosti reports.
Moscow's Presnensky District Court found the blogger guilty of money laundering.
According to the report, the court fined him 1 million rubles, banned him from managing social media channels for two years, and ordered the confiscation of his apartment in Moscow City.
It was reported that Huseyn Hasanov is currently outside the country, and the trial was held in absentia because he has been placed on the international wanted list. He has denied the charges and said he hopes to be acquitted.
According to the investigation, the blogger evaded paying more than 170 million rubles in taxes between 2019 and 2021. He later used an illegal scheme to legalize part of those funds during the sale of an apartment in Moscow City worth approximately 68 million rubles. According to the allegations, the buyer of the apartment placed a box of cookies (crackers), instead of money, in a bank safe deposit box, thereby completing the property transaction.
The prosecution had requested that Huseyn Hasanov be sentenced to six years in prison, fined 155 million rubles, and have his apartment confiscated.
