Russian chief designer of nuclear submarines Igor Spassky has died

Academician Igor Spassky, who worked for a long time as a general designer at the Rubin Central Marine Engineering Design Bureau (TsKB MT), has passed away at the age of 98, TASS wrote, citing a source in the shipbuilding industry, APA reports.

From 1983 to 2007 he held the position of General Designer of the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering. According to the projects created under the leadership of Igor Spassky, more than 200 nuclear and diesel-electric submarines were built, in particular: strategic nuclear submarine cruisers of Project 667BDR “Kalmar”, Project 941 “Akula”, Project 667BDRM “Dolphin”, nuclear submarine missile cruisers of projects 949 “Granit” and 949A “Antey”, diesel-electric submarines of projects 877, 636.

In 2018, Spassky was awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Russian Federation, Hero of Socialist Labor (1978), holder of two Orders of Lenin (1970, 1978), Order of the October Revolution (1986), two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, Russian Orders of Merit to the Fatherland, II degree (2002), Honor (2010).
