The Federal Agency for Air Transport of the Russian Federation, Rosaviatsiya, has released an official statement regarding the crash of an AZAL aircraft in Aktau, APA's Russian bureau reports.
The statement reads:
"Today, at approximately 9:30 Moscow time, an Embraer 190 aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan's AZAL airline crashed while landing at Kazakhstan's Aktau Airport, located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. The aircraft was operating a flight from Baku to Grozny.
According to preliminary findings, after a collision with a flock of birds, due to an emergency situation on board, the captain of the aircraft decided to divert to an alternative airfield, selecting Aktau as the destination.
Search and rescue operations are being conducted by the operational services of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Rosaviatsiya is maintaining communication with AZAL, as well as the aviation authorities of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan."
