Reconstruction of the Azerbaijani theater in Derbent is nearing completion, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said during a briefing held in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

During the press tour organized in the Republic of Dagestan for foreign journalists accredited in Russia, Zakharova spoke about the republic’s rich cultural heritage and socio-economic life.

She noted that she had visited Derbent and highlighted the richness of the ancient city’s cultural heritage.

Zakharova emphasized that more than 11 national theaters operate in the multiethnic region of Dagestan. She spoke about the reconstruction of the Azerbaijan Drama Theater building in Derbent and noted that the renovation is nearing completion.

Note that the Azerbaijan State Drama Theater in Derbent was founded in 1904. Initially operating as an amateur club in the early 20th century, the Azerbaijan Drama Theater received official status in 1904 and became a state theater in 1934. Although its stage curtains were temporarily closed in 1944, the theater reopened to audiences in 1994.

Considering that the conditions in the theater building were unsatisfactory and its equipment did not meet modern standards, funds were allocated from the Reserve Fund of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan by an order dated August 3, 2015. These funds were transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the reconstruction and modernization of the Azerbaijan State Drama Theater building.
