Russian President Vladimir Putin met high-ranking representatives of the BRICS countries in charge of security issues on 12 September in St. Petersburg, APA reports citing TV BRICS.
"We could not ignore the growing interest in BRICS on the part of many states. As of today, more than three dozen countries, 34 states to be exact, have declared their desire to join the activities of our group," the Russian President said.
Note that Azerbaijan has also applied for membership in BRICS a while ago. In the Joint Declaration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China on the establishment of a strategic partnership, adopted on July 3 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's summit in Astana, it is mentioned that the Azerbaijani side expresses its desire to join BRICS.
The Joint Declaration states that the Chinese side welcomes Azerbaijan's participation in BRICS cooperation.
Subsequently, Azerbaijan officially applied for membership in the organization.
Türkiye is also said to have applied to join BRICS.
Recall that the organization is named BRICS based on the initials of the founding countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Currently, the organization has 9 members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
