Ten bishops who have sworn allegiance to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan have issued a joint statement regarding the recent developments surrounding the Armenian Apostolic Church, APA reports, citing foreign media.

The statement says the events unfolding around the Church could cause irreparable damage to the Church, the state, and the faithful people.

The bishops emphasized that they have repeatedly expressed these concerns both in personal meetings with the Catholicos of All Armenians and in the public sphere.

The document notes that in recent years, the voices of clergy and believers have not only gone unheard, but have also failed to have a decisive impact on the fulfillment of the Church’s mission. According to the bishops, the current deplorable condition of the Mother Church poses a serious threat to Armenia’s national and state security interests, and everyone bears responsibility before history for the decisions taken.

The statement called on the clergy and believers in Armenia, as well as in the diaspora, to demonstrate a united will and raise a just voice of protest against this “destructive and anti-canonical process.” At the same time, it demanded a complete rejection of attempts to subordinate the Armenian Apostolic Church to foreign interests.

The bishops have called on people to gather on December 18 at 17:00 at the First See of Holy Etchmiadzin, regarded as the spiritual center of all Armenians, and have described the resignation of Catholicos Karekin II as a necessary step.
