Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that there is currently no option for his country to join the European Union (EU) as an alternative to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), APA reports.
Pashinyan made the remarks during his speech at the meeting of the EAEU Intergovernmental Council held in Kyrgyzstan.
According to him, Armenia understands that it is not possible to be a member of both the EAEU and the EU at the same time. However, he noted that the adoption of the law on EU integration merely indicates that Armenia may have the opportunity to become a member of the European Union in the future.
The Prime Minister stressed that even if Armenia is ready for EU membership in the future, this does not automatically mean it will become a member. Such a step would require both the approval of EU member states and the support of Armenian citizens.
Pashinyan also emphasized that holding a referendum on the issue before the necessary institutional preparations are made, before submitting an official application for EU membership, and before obtaining candidate country status would be meaningless.
"This would mean putting citizens in a position to choose between alternatives that do not exist. That would be disrespectful to the people and an illegitimate step," the Armenian Prime Minister said.
