Official Moscow: Russia will not allow Ukraine to acquire nuclear weapons

"Russia will not allow Ukraine to acquire nuclear weapons. This is completely unacceptable for Russia," states a declaration by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 30th anniversary of the Budapest Memorandum, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.

It was noted that Kyiv's acquisition of nuclear weapons contradicts its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"Russia does not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons but warns of the risk of a clash among nuclear powers amid the Ukraine crisis. Moscow's official statements in this area fully comply with international obligations. This is not the language of threats but the logic of classic deterrence," the statement said.

Official Moscow also stated that the provisions of the Budapest Memorandum were violated not by Russia but by the West and Ukraine itself.
