Moscow universities evacuated following bomb threats

An evacuation is underway at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow, the university’s press service told TASS.

Students and staff are currently being evacuated from the educational institution.

According to reports, students and staff have been evacuated from at least nine higher education institutions across Moscow.

The Bolshoy Gorod publication reported that information had been received about bombs allegedly planted in the buildings of several universities in the Russian capital.

The evacuated institutions include the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, State University of Education, Moscow State University of Sports and Tourism, Kosygin Russian State University, Moscow International University, Russian Foreign Trade Academy, GITR Film and Television School, and Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI).

The press service of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia said the circumstances of the incident are being investigated. Police and emergency rescue personnel are currently working on the university premises.

The main building of GITIS, located in Kislovsky Lane, has also been evacuated. Students and staff have been evacuated from all buildings of the State University of Education.

In addition, classes at Moscow State University of Psychology and Education were reportedly moved online following an anonymous message. The university’s press service said its security service had informed the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Federal Security Service about the incident.

According to preliminary information, the bomb threats that prompted the evacuations are believed to be false. Inspections of the university buildings are continuing.
