The Gulag History Museum in the Russian capital has been closed, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.
A Memorial Museum dedicated to the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people during the “Great Patriotic War” (World War II – ed.) will be opened in its place.
“A Memorial Museum will be opened in Moscow. It will be dedicated to the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people. The exhibition will cover all stages of the Nazis’ war crimes during the Great Patriotic War,” the announcement on the main page of the Gulag Museum’s website states.
The Moscow City Hall has announced that the new museum will open in 2026.
In November 2024, the Gulag History Museum announced that it would close indefinitely due to technical reasons — fire safety violations. The museum has not resumed operations since.
