The preliminary investigation into whether Armenia's former president, Armen Sarkisyan, holds foreign citizenship is ongoing, Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia released information in response to an inquiry from Sputnik Armenia, APA reports.

The department has not disclosed any details.

It was previously revealed that the case was transferred from the National Security Service to the Investigative Committee.

Recall that Armen Sarkisyan served as Armenia's president from 2018 to 2022. He resigned in January 2022, citing insufficient powers to influence political processes in the country. According to Hetq.am, a day after announcing his resignation, it was reported that Sarkisyan was a citizen of the small Caribbean island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, acquired before his election.

According to the publication, he obtained this citizenship in exchange for an investment of $500,000. Under the Armenian Constitution, holding foreign citizenship deprives an individual of the right to be elected president.
