Georgia moving away from EU instead of getting closer - German Ambassador

Georgia is moving further away from approaching the European Union instead of getting closer, said Germany's Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, in his statement to journalists, APA's Tbilisi correspondent reports.

"Georgia has had candidate status since December 2023. This status is one of the greatest gifts the EU can offer for membership. You have this invitation, but since June of last year, work on Georgia’s candidate status has been halted because Georgia is moving away from the alliance instead of getting closer to it," Fischer said.

The ambassador noted that the Georgian government is responsible for the suspension of the membership process. He added that Germany has imposed additional entry restrictions on Georgian officials responsible for human rights violations against protesters.
