General Alexander Lapin will become Deputy Prime Minister of Tatarstan. In Ukraine, he was заочно sentenced to life imprisonment. The head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov announced his appointment, writes "Current Time, " Nashaniva reports.
He will oversee issues related to supporting participants of the "special military operation" (as Russian authorities call the full-scale invasion of Ukraine). For this purpose, a separate structural unit was created within the government of Tatarstan.
Lapin is a Colonel General in the reserve. In various years, he served as Chief of Staff of the troop group in Syria, and Commander of the "Center" and "North" groups.
In autumn 2022, he had a conflict with the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, who accused him of the effective surrender of Lyman, which was captured by Russia in the first days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and liberated by the Ukrainian army during the autumn counter-offensive of 2022.
In September 2025, Lapin was dismissed from the army.
In June 2026, a court in Ukraine заочно sentenced Lapin to life imprisonment on charges of encroaching on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, as well as preparing and conducting aggressive warfare.
