A former judge wanted in Russia, Yelena Khakhaleva was detained at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku by the personnel of the Air Transport Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, APA reports.

The former judge was detained in Baku last week.

A presentation from the prosecutor's office was considered at the Khazar District Court regarding her case.

On January 24, at the hearing chaired by Judge Ramilə Xəzri, a decision was made to select a 40-day detention as a precautionary measure.

The detention measure was chosen to carry out the legal procedures related to her extradition.

Once the necessary documents for her extradition are provided by Russia, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes will consider the issue of Yelena Khakhaleva's extradition.

On January 27, the former Russian court judge, Yelena Khakhaleva, who was detained in Baku, will be extradited to her home country,  RIA "Novosti" reported citing sources, APA reports.

The former judge detained in Baku will be extradited to Russia after the court's decision.

Note that the Russian side had previously issued a search warrant for her on charges of fraud and abuse of office, and the Rostov-on-Don court had issued an absentee arrest warrant. Following her detention at the airport, the necessary documents for her extradition were requested from the relevant Russian authorities. According to the investigation, she allegedly embezzled approximately 1.2 million rubles through deceit and falsified documents related to working hours. The Russian Investigative Committee issued an arrest warrant for Khakhaleva and placed her on the international wanted list. On May 17, 2022, fraud and office forgery charges were brought against her.
