National hero, former first deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia Tiran Khachatryan was detained this morning, his lawyer Varazdat Harutyunyan told Sputnik Armenia, APA reports.
"The former first deputy chief of the General Staff has been charged in connection with certain episodes of the 44-day war. A motion for his arrest has been submitted to the court," he said.
The Investigative Committee also informed Sputnik Armenia that a person has been arrested and that legal and procedural actions are being taken.
Tiran Khachatryan was awarded the title of national hero in October 2020. Later, in February 2021, the general was dismissed from his post. The reason was Khachatryan’s sarcastic statements in response to Pashinyan’s statement about the Iskander missiles. The Prime Minister had stated that during the war the missiles “did not explode or exploded only 10 percent.” After his resignation, the general has repeatedly criticized the authorities’ policies and participated in opposition rallies.
It should be noted that the general was also arrested and then detained in early 2024 as a result of an argument and fight in a restaurant. During the fight, Khachatryan fired a weapon, accidentally wounding a restaurant patron who was not involved in the argument. He was released on bail in March 2024.
