Former Commander-in-Chief of Kazakhstan’s Naval Forces Kanat Niyazbekov has been arrested, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said, APA reports.
Niyazbekov is suspected of negligence in the performance of official duties as part of a criminal case concerning the deaths of servicemen during military exercises in the Caspian Sea.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the former commander was detained and placed in a temporary detention facility. A court ordered his pre-trial detention.
It should be noted that on September 24, strong winds swept 17 servicemen into the sea during military exercises held in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region. Three of them were rescued, while 14 servicemen died.
Five high-ranking military officers had previously been detained in connection with the incident. The investigation is examining the organization of the exercises, compliance with safety measures, whether weather conditions were taken into account, and the technical condition of the boat.
