Armenia's Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has authorized the initiation of criminal proceedings against the country's second president, Robert Kocharyan, Armenian media reports.

According to the information, lawyer Aram Orbelyan announced the decision to journalists following a meeting of the CEC.

“The Commission authorized the criminal proceedings,” Orbelyan said.

He noted that the charges involve abuse of official powers and money laundering.

It should be noted that Armenia's Prosecutor General's Office had submitted a motion to the Central Electoral Commission seeking permission to initiate criminal proceedings against Robert Kocharyan, the leader of the Armenia Alliance bloc and the country's second president. In addition to Kocharyan, the CEC was also asked to lift the immunity of parliamentary candidates Asatur Kocharyan and Ruslan Barseghyan.

It should be recalled that some time ago former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan attempted to leave the country through Zvartnots International Airport. According to reports, law enforcement authorities prevented him from departing.
