Around 20 passengers were inside the bus when it crashed through the side of a bridge in St Petersburg and sank underwater - at least seven people have died, while eight were rescued, APA reports citing The Mirror.

A desperate rescue mission was launched after a bus carrying at least 20 people plunged into a river in Russia, claiming the lives of seven people so far.

The vehicle, which drove along a busy street in St Petersburg, was filmed crashing through the side of a bridge and sinking underwater. At least seven people have died and eight pulled out alive through the hatch in the roof of the bus by rescuers.

At least five people were taken to hospital. Another ten passengers managed to escape on their own into the Moika River, where they were collected by rescue boats, according to reports. Searches of the river are thought to be ongoing.

Reports said the driver was among those who escaped and was immediately detained, with a criminal case opened.

A passenger bus fell off a bridge and into a river in the Russian city of St Petersburg on Friday, the local department of the emergencies ministry said, APA reports.

3 people died as a result of the accident.

A video published by the authorities showed the bus swerving wildly before crashing through the bridge railings and getting almost fully submerged with water.

The emergencies department said rescuers were working at the scene.
