A measure of restraint in the form of house arrest has been imposed on Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, said his lawyer, Aram Vardevanyan, APA reports, citing local media.

According to the lawyer, a court hearing that lasted 14 hours has concluded, and the court rejected the motion to place Karapetyan in pretrial detention. As a result, a decision was made to place him under house arrest.

“This demonstrates the absurd intensity of political persecution. Although the request for detention was rejected, house arrest was imposed. At the same time, the restriction on Samvel Karapetyan’s public statements has been lifted,” the lawyer said.

So far, official bodies have not issued any additional statements on the matter.

It should be noted that in June of last year, an Armenian court brought charges against Karapetyan under the article of “public calls to violently seize power.” Prior to these charges, Samvel Karapetyan had made sharply critical statements against the authorities regarding the political situation in the country.
