Armenia and Iran are working on a new bridge project over the Araz River, Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia Kristina Galechyan told Spuntik-Armenia, APA reports.
According to Galechyan, the control capacity of the current bridge is not suitable for the increased freight traffic.
"Experts are conducting technical and economic studies for designing the bridge at the next stage. During the design, the parameters of the currently working bridge, especially its capacity, will be taken into account."
The deputy minister did not rule out the possibility of building the new bridge in parallel with the current one.
Galechyan said that the active phase of the works will probably start in February of next year, regarding the construction of the part of the South of the North-South highway, from Agarak village of Syunik province of Armenia, which borders with Iran to Qajaran city.
