Abbas Alasgarov elected chairman of Azerbaijani Architects’ Union
Expressing their anxiety about the present state of Baku, Hafiz Amirkhanov underlined that buildings of various colors damage the style of architecture.
“Everyone dyes the building the color he likes. We should think of the city’s palette. We should try not to lose our image,†he said.
Architect Arif Shahbazov also complained of the situation in Baku.
“How can we explain the happenings in Baku? Who will answer for it? There were 14 squares in Baku. New buildings are being constructed in these squares. It will lead to tragedy. It causes traffic jam in the city. Everybody should worry about wastes in Baku,†he said.
Chief of President’s Office humanitarian department Fatma Abdullazade said like other creative organizations, Azerbaijani Architects’ Union also needs a state program for improving creative conditions.
“Each state has several main duties. State collects taxes, protects its borders and adopts laws. The state has no other main duty. There is only one structure in every country which is called civil society. If any problems are revealed inside the country, associations, bodies, unities are being established for solving these problems. To my regret, civil society in Azerbaijan is weak. Architects’ Union is not an opposite force. A decent chief should be appointed to Architects’ Union,†he said.
Following this, famous architect Elbay Gasimzada gave information on chief election. He listed the names of the architects who nominated themselves for chairmanship during the Congress intended to be held in 2005: Agil Ahmadzadeh, Nariman Aliyev, Rasim Aliyev, Hafiz Amirkhanov, Aybaniz Hasanova, Elbay Gasimzada and Nizami Nagiyev. Names of Aybaniz Hasanov and Rasim Aliyev were crossed out of the list of candidates as they did not attend the Congress. Elbay Gasimzada, Nizami Nagiyev and Agil Ahmedzada withdrew their candidacy.
Gasimzada initiated candidacy of Abbas Alasgarov for the chairmanship in Architecture and Town-building Committee. Three candidates participated in chief election – Hafiz Amirkhanov, Nariman Aliyev and Abbas Alasgarov. Abbas Alasgarov won 54 votes in open voting and was elected chief of Architects’ Union. The Congress continues its work at present and Managing Board of the Union is being formed. /APA/
