A new agreement under discussion between Iran and Oman could give Tehran partial control over ships entering the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reports.

According to the agency, this is considered one of the most significant concessions made to Iran.

However, sources did not confirm U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that an agreement on restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is imminent. They said a number of key details of the deal have yet to be agreed upon.

One regional source told Reuters that a concession has already been made regarding granting Iran a certain form of control over the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a senior Iranian official, Tehran has proposed imposing a fee equal to 5–7% of the value of cargo carried by ships entering the Persian Gulf through the strait. Oman is discussing a lower fee of around 3%.
