Indian President Draupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who resigned amid student protests over the leaked exam materials, and appointed Prahlad Joshi as the new head of the ministry. The presidential office issued a statement to this effect, APA reports.

"The President of India, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the post of a member of the Council of Ministers with immediate effect," the statement said. "Furthermore, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, the President has ordered Prahlad Joshi to be appointed to the Ministry of Education in addition to his current portfolio."

Joshi already oversees the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, as well as the Department of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution. A member of parliament for five terms, he previously held the posts of Minister of Coal, Minister of Mines, and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.

Pradhan's resignation ended several days of protests sparked by the scandal surrounding the postponement of the national medical exam in May to June due to a leak of test questions. Over 2.2 million young people took the exam in over 550 cities across India. Protesters blamed the education minister for the delay and demanded his resignation.
