Iran's Supreme National Security Council will approve the agreement on the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway, Iranian Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Houshang Bazvand said, APA's Tehran bureau reports.
According to him, land acquisition along the 162-kilometer Rasht-Astara route has been completed.
Bazvand noted that one of Russia's concerns had been the implementation of land acquisition work, and Moscow had stated that it would begin the project once the process was completed.
He said Moscow had requested that the agreement be approved by the Iranian Parliament or the Supreme National Security Council, as is the case in Russia, in order to sign the implementation contract for the project.
Bazvand added that the issue is currently undergoing the approval process at the Supreme National Security Council. In his opinion, the Council will decide within a few months at most whether the project will be implemented jointly with Russia or carried out by Iran.
The deputy minister emphasized that Iran's goal is to begin construction of the Rasht-Astara railway project with Russia after the agreement is approved by the Supreme National Security Council.
