Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has said that the process of ratifying the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea will be carried out in the Iranian parliament in the near future, APA's Tehran bureau reports.
Responding to a question on the matter at a weekly press conference, Baghaei said the document had been signed and its legal, political and other aspects had been reviewed.
According to him, the Convention was approved by the Iranian government on July 22 and submitted to parliament, where it is expected to go through the ratification process in the near future.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that Iran carefully considers all aspects when joining international documents, and that the same approach was taken with regard to this Convention.
Baghaei noted that the document's approval by parliament would help develop cooperation among the Caspian littoral states and prevent possible misuse of the body of water by forces from outside the region.
He added that some issues that have caused concern among the Iranian public are not reflected in the Convention. According to Baghaei, the issue of the baseline will be discussed within the framework of a separate convention.
