The United States must meet a number of conditions if it wants to reach an agreement with Iran on restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters at the UN, APA reports.
“These steps are not new. They are all reflected in the memorandum,” Araghchi said.
He was referring to the memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran this summer. Although the document sets out a number of measures aimed at de-escalating the crisis, the parties are currently not fulfilling those commitments.
Araghchi recalled that Tehran had presented the United States with a seven-day plan for restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, Washington must now decide whether to accept the proposal.
“If they agree, for example, tomorrow, the seven-day period will also begin to be counted from tomorrow,” the Iranian Foreign Minister said.
According to Araghchi, the United States could fulfill its obligations under the proposed plan within four or five days, after which shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could resume on the sixth day.
Under Iran’s plan, once the seven-day process is completed, the parties could begin negotiations aimed at resolving the issues that led to the military confrontation.
