India said Tuesday that 11 of its citizens were injured after a Panama-flagged commercial vessel was hit by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, Anadolu Agency reports.

A statement by India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that 17 of the 19 crew members aboard the vessel “MT On Peace” were Indian nationals. It said the incident took place early Tuesday.

“It is learnt that 12 crew members have been injured, including 11 Indian nationals. With the assistance of Omani authorities, the injured crew have since been evacuated and are receiving medical treatment in Khasab, Oman,” the ministry said.

Noting that “continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region remain a cause of deep concern for India,” New Delhi reiterated its call for “an immediate cessation of such attacks in the interests of peace and stability in the region.”

“The targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and navigation and commerce through international waterways must be restored at the earliest,” the ministry said.

Regional tensions have remained high since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israeli targets and US military facilities across the region. The war has also severely disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies.

Iran has since linked the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to measures including an end to hostilities, sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets and the implementation of commitments by Washington.
