Presidential elections in Syria will be held in four years under a new constitution, announced the Arab Republic's transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, speaking at the Doha Forum, APA reports.
"We held a comprehensive national dialogue conference, which resulted in an interim constitutional declaration. This declaration authorized the president to remain in power for five years, during which time numerous laws will be passed and a constitution will be drafted, which will serve as the founding principle of the system of government. We will definitely hold elections in four years," al-Sharaa said, emphasizing that "this process requires more time due to the nature and complexity of the transition period."
He noted that the transitional government organized parliamentary elections "despite the difficult circumstances in which the country found itself," emphasizing that this process took place "in accordance with the current situation" in the absence of a full-fledged infrastructure.
