Baku-APA. Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has called former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a “murderer” for his role in the Iraq war, APA reports quoting Press TV.

"It's not enough that they destroyed Iraq, 1,200,000 were killed in Iraq because of Aznar, the murderer of Spain, the bloodthirsty murderer of Spain, the former Spanish president (sic) Aznar," Maduro said on Friday in a televised cabinet meeting.

"I call him a murderer because he is responsible for the deaths of 1,200,000 Iraqis," he added.

Spain, led by conservative Aznar, backed the US-led coalition that invaded Iraq in 2003. It sent over 1,000 troops to Iraq.

At a 2007 summit in Chile, Maduro’s predecessor Hugo Chavez accused Aznar of backing a coup that briefly removed him from power in 2002 and repeatedly called Aznar "fascist.
