Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver was killed at Motel 6 on Arden Way on Friday morning.
Sheriff Scott Jones told reporters a suspicious vehicle was reported and deputies responded.
The suspect opened fire from within the vehicle, shooting Oliver in the forehead. The 47-year-old was a 15-year veteran of the force.
Two Placer County officers were also shot.
A massive search is underway for two suspects in Auburn.
Jones also said the civilian victim in Sacramento was shot in the head when he refused to surrender his car to the alleged gunman.
A witness said she heard multiple shots fired and later saw the deputy sprawled on the parking lot not moving.
According to the female witness, she spent the night at the motel to celebrate her anniversary and that her family and baby were still in the second-floor room.
“If you snuck outside you could see him lying there,” she said. “I heard the shots, like nine of them. It was terrible.”
The latest shooting came hours after another incident in Washington.
A student opened fire at a high school north of Seattle, killing one person and injuring four others before turning the gun on himself.
The shooting incident happened in the cafeteria of Marysville Pilchuck High School on Friday morning.
