Baku-APA. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has asked Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman to attend the inauguration of Pyotr Poroshenko who won the May 25 presidential election in Ukraine, the Secretary General’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters Wednesday, APA reports quoting ITAR-TASS.

During the stay in Kiev, Feltman is expected to hold meetings with a range of Ukrainian officials.

Feltman who occupied the post of the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for the Middle East prior to his relocation to the UN visited Kiev the last time at the end of May. He also held consultations in Moscow then.

Mikhail Okhendovsky, the chairman of Ukraine’s central electoral commission said June 2 Pyotr Poroshenko, the Ukrainian candy industry tycoon who had been running for presidency as a self-nominated candidate, had won the May 25 presidential election by getting 54.7% in the first round.

Plans to attend Poroshenko’s inauguration in Kiev on the background of the continuing punitive armed operation in the east-Ukrainian regions, where the majority of people demand federalization of the country, have been revealed by European Council President Hermann Van Rumpuy, U.S. Vice-President Joseph Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and French Foreign Minister Loran Fabius.
