According to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department news release, detectives on Saturday morning responded to calls about the shooting and discovered the woman dead at the scene.
“Unfortunately the female was shot and she’s been pronounced dead at the scene,” Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch said.
“(The) car drove eastbound here on 104th Street and the investigation’s just starting. Detectives are on scene, we’re going to try to find some witnesses if we can.”
The couple had just returned home from going to the movies with family when the shooting occurred, according to family members.
“Every day we have to live underneath this, everyday. So maybe if we get the violence stopped, you know what I’m saying, it’ll be easier. It’s just everyday how we live in our neighborhood,” the woman’s niece Connie Powell said.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants were two black men in a dark colored sedan.
The shooting comes against the backdrop of rising gun violence across the country. Over 12,000 Americans were killed in gun-related violence last year alone.
