The United States has an estimated 283 million guns in civilian hands.

The “endemic” gun violence in the United States represents a “substantial, long-term cumulative health burden,” according to a study published on Thursday and conducted by researchers from Columbia University in New York, using data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Researchers calculated that if present trends continue, Americans can expect to lose 336,778 lives to guns between 2011 and 2020.

The US averages about 87 gun deaths and 183 injuries each day in result of gun violence, equaling to over 30,000 deaths per year, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the CDC.
