The administration of US President Donald Trump plans to impose sweeping sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), APA reports citing The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

According to information, it is not yet clear when the final decision will be announced, however, according to unnamed officials in the US administration, clarity on this issue could come within a week.

As the newspaper notes, the restrictions will apply, in particular, to most financial transactions with the ICC, but these restrictions will be suspended for six to seven months. As the newspaper points out, such a move "could potentially paralyze the court's work by prohibiting dollar transactions and cutting it off from a large part of the financial system." Financial transactions related to telecommunications services may be an exception to the restrictions, the WSJ writes.

The current US administration has imposed sanctions on the ICC several times. Trump signed an executive order imposing restrictions on court officials on February 6, 2025. The US government accused the ICC of unlawful actions against Washington and its allies, such as Israel. The order allows for financial and visa restrictions to be imposed on ICC staff involved in investigations of Americans or citizens of US allies.
