Polling stations closed at 5:00 PM local time across Brazil, where voting in the general election took place on October 4, APA reports.

The country's Supreme Electoral Court has begun counting votes. Polling stations where queues had formed by the end of their opening hours will continue to accept voters until the last voter in line casts their ballot.

According to pre-election polls, none of the candidates, including incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his main rival, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, will be able to secure an absolute majority of votes (more than 50%). In that case, a runoff vote will be held on October 25.

Thanks to Brazil's fully automated system using electronic ballot boxes, preliminary results of the first round will be known in just a few hours.
