The U.S. has signaled to multiple Gulf countries that it may conduct a brief and forceful military operation against Iran after the midterms, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing anonymous sources briefed on the conversations.
Although President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision, U.S. forces in the area have been preparing for potential strikes. Trump is "leaning toward a large post-election attack that could target Iranian infrastructure and nuclear sites," the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with his thinking.
The U.S. and Israel would reportedly conduct the strikes "in hopes of degrading Tehran's strength and pushing it toward negotiations." However, analysts have questioned whether this would actually be an effective means of getting Iran to capitulate since it's already withstood a heavy military campaign.
The White House told the publication it wouldn't comment on "sensitive military plans that may or may not exist."
