he US Coast Guard has announced that it detained two vessels allegedly transporting fuel illegally to Cuba as part of Washington's fuel blockade against the country, APA reports, citing The New York Times.
On September 5, the 91-meter-long container ship “Grace” was intercepted in the Caribbean Sea between Cuba and Mexico. Authorities said suspicions arose after the vessel switched off signals showing its position in an apparent attempt to avoid tracking.
In addition, the smaller vessel “Jaira Provider,” which was carrying fuel to Cuba earlier in the summer, was also detained. Based on US intelligence, the fuel aboard both vessels was determined to be destined for Cuba. The “Jaira Provider” was reported to be carrying around 800 tons of fuel.
Both vessels were last reported to have called at the Port of Colón in Panama, while the origin of the fuel has not been disclosed.
The United States has imposed an oil and fuel blockade on Cuba since January.
