US imposes 50% tariffs on some Canadian imports after trade talks fail

The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on a range of goods imported from Canada after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa ended without an agreement.

The new tariffs affect hundreds of Canadian products, including automobiles and auto parts, alcoholic beverages, dairy and agricultural products, textiles and clothing, cosmetics, furniture, electronics, equipment, diamonds and toys.

The measures cover around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, representing approximately 5% of Canada's annual exports to the United States.

The US administration has linked the decision to what it considers discriminatory Canadian trade measures against American products. Washington has particularly raised concerns over Canada's treatment of US exports in sectors including automobiles, alcohol and dairy.

The tariffs were introduced under Section 338 of the US Tariff Act of 1930, which allows the president to impose duties of up to 50% on imports from countries deemed to discriminate against US businesses.

The move marks a further escalation in trade tensions between the two neighboring countries following the collapse of negotiations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Ottawa will respond with retaliatory tariffs on US goods on a "dollar-for-dollar" basis, with the measures expected to take effect on September 8.
