US and Israeli armed forces are preparing for a possible resumption of large-scale military operations against Iran, Axios reported, citing sources within the US administration.
According to the report, officials are considering launching operations before Israel’s parliamentary elections on October 27 and the US congressional midterm elections on November 3.
US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly discussed the possibility of a new large-scale operation against Iran last week.
Those discussions took place before Trump’s October 8 statement that the United States would not strike Iran before the congressional elections.
However, Axios reported that US and Israeli forces remain on combat alert and are finalising preparations in case Trump changes his position.
Sources said the scenario under discussion involves joint strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities.
The report identified Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the leadership of US Central Command as the main supporters of such an operation within the US administration. Most of Trump’s advisers favour continued economic pressure and other measures against Tehran.
On October 13, Trump said he would soon decide on Washington’s next steps regarding Iran.
