"The US assesses and adapts its policy to support Ukraine in a variety of ways," said U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Ambassador Julianne Smith in an online press briefing, APA reports.
While answering the question "Could the United States give Ukraine permission to strike with U.S. arms targets not only in Russian border zones, but outside of that? And do you think other NATO member states who deliver arms to Ukraine must let it strike targets in Russia?", Ambassador Smith has noted:
"We get real-time feedback from our friends in Ukraine in terms of what assistance they need, whether it’s specific capabilities, or help rebuilding their energy sector after a whole series of attacks on critical infrastructure, or as was the case in early May, they came to the United States with a question about possibly targeting Russian territory in areas where the Russians are striking directly into or around Kharkiv.
We took that information on board. Within a few weeks, the President had made a decision. He made a determination that that type of targeting is something that we could support, and that is the latest development. What will happen in the future is hard to predict, but what’s key here is maintaining open channels of communication with our friends in Ukraine and understanding again what their real-time needs are on the battlefield and how we continue to support them going forward.
I think you have heard from colleagues in Washington that our policy right now on the long-range ATACMS is that those types of weapons are not to be used to strike Russian territory. But again, as Secretary Blinken has said several times now, this is a process we will continue to assess and adapt to their ever-evolving needs."
