US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning the practice known as "birth tourism" in the United States.
The practice involves foreign nationals traveling to the US to give birth so that their child automatically acquires US citizenship.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said the executive order expands the categories of individuals who will not be eligible to obtain citizenship based on birthright.
According to Miller, the measure applies to foreign nationals deemed hostile to the United States, members of foreign terrorist organizations, as well as individuals representing or acting on behalf of foreign governments.
He said the decision would prevent a large number of people from obtaining US citizenship through birthright "without legitimate grounds."
Miller added that this marks the first time in US history that "birth tourism" has been formally prohibited.
