U.S. appreciates Russia’s release of American Mark Fogel, U.S. President Donald Trump made this statement on Tuesday, APA reports.
"I greatly appreciate their decision to allow Mark to come home," Trump said during his meeting with Fogel at the White House.
Trump also noted that Fogel’s release could become a crucial element in resolving the Ukraine conflict and that significant progress had been made on the matter.
It should be recalled that Mark Fogel, a former employee of the U.S. Embassy, was arrested in Moscow in 2022 as part of a criminal case related to drug smuggling.
He was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport after border security’s sniffer dog discovered marijuana and hash oil in his luggage.
The court sentenced Fogel to 14 years in a high-security prison for smuggling and possession of a large quantity of narcotics.
At the time of his arrest, Fogel was a teacher at the Anglo-American School and had previously worked at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
