The US administration doesn't understand why Volodymyr Zelenskyy is lying about the content of negotiations aimed at a settlement in Ukraine, it was stated by US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio.
"He was told quite clearly, and he should have understood, that security guarantees [for the West to Kyiv] would only follow after the war was over. However, this was not attached to the condition of their surrendering territory. I have no idea why he would say that. It simply doesn't correspond to reality," Rubio noted.
He also dismissed Zelenskyy's claims that Kyiv would only receive security guarantees if the Ukrainian Armed Forces withdrew from Donbas as lies. "That's a lie. And I saw him say it. It's unfortunate that he said it. Because he knows it's not true, and he wasn't told that," Rubio emphasized in a conversation with reporters following his participation in the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in France.
The Secretary of State also confirmed that the United States does not intend to provide security guarantees to Ukraine while hostilities are ongoing. "What is a security guarantee? It's troops ready to go into action. Deploying them now means you're entering a war," Rubio explained.
