U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the Iranian delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly to leave New York immediately after negotiations between Washington and Tehran reached a stalemate, APA reports, citing Axios.
According to the report, Rubio instructed the U.S. Mission to the United Nations to inform the Iranian delegation that it had to leave the country.
The delegation included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. There had been optimism on Monday morning that indirect U.S.-Iran talks mediated by Qatar could produce progress, but the negotiations reached an impasse later in the day.
Axios reported that the Iranian delegation headed to a New York airport several hours later and flew to Doha. However, one source said Araghchi had already planned to leave New York that evening.
The talks have focused on significant differences between the two sides. Iran has sought the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade and other restrictions, while Washington has demanded concessions concerning Tehran's nuclear program.
