The spring military exercises of NATO countries taking place in Europe are actually "exercises against the Russians." This wording was voiced by General Darryl Williams in an interview with the New York Times, APA reports.

"Now, this year, we are actually conducting exercises against the Russians. We are fighting our potential opponent," Williams said, stressing that previously a fictional opponent had appeared in such exercises.

General Darryl Williams is the commander of the US Army in Europe.

According to the publication, the NATO military exercises in the spring of 2024 are designed to simulate the "first moments of the conflict of the great powers" and will be the largest since the Cold War.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that NATO military exercises near the Russian borders increase the risks of possible military incidents.

Meanwhile, it became known that a Spanish soldier died at a NATO exercise in Poland. The Polish Defense Ministry said it was an accident.
