The United States wants Israel to take "small steps" in the Gaza Strip to test how serious the radical Palestinian movement Hamas is about disarming its forces, APA reports citing Axios.
US Presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner voiced Washington's proposal during consultations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. The prime minister expressed deep skepticism about Hamas's commitment to demilitarization and asked Kushner why he met with the movement's leaders in Egypt on Sunday, a source told the portal. Kushner responded that it was important to hear directly from them whether they were ready to move toward disarmament. "The last time [US Presidential Envoy] Steve Witkoff and I met with Hamas leaders, it resulted in the release of all hostages," the US leader's son-in-law added. The release refers to the 2025 release of hostages captured during the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
